The Chocolate War DQ’s Chapters 1-10

1.What affect did the first sentence have on you? Why did the author use it? (ask this question again after reading the whole book)
-It immediately drew me in because I wanted to know what was going to happen. To pull you into the story and e interested.
2.Do you feel you have to stay on the good side of anyone if your life? Why?
-Yes, because it seems like that one person you get on there bad side they’ll turn everyone against you, or either you just don’t ever want to do anything to cause you to loose them.
3.What would you do? AND How would you feel if you found out someone was keeping private information about you (like Obie’s notebook)
-If it was for needs to actually know for some type of reason, but if some random person had it I would feel scared and wonder what his reasons were for.
4.Why is the man at the bus stop contemptuous of Jerry? What does he mean when he tells him he’s “missing a lot in the world?”
-He thinks his life is basically boring and he doesn’t know what’s really going on because he always seems to be doing things because he has to not because he wants to.
5.Who is Brother Leon?
-a teacher
6.Why does everyone in the school ignore the Vigils?
-they aren’t aloud to talk about the vigils
7.Why does Goober have to comply with the assignment? What would you do?
-He wants to be accepted by the vigils. I probably wouldn’t and just leave it alone.
8.What kind of teacher is Brother Leon? Have you ever seen a teacher pick on a student? Have you ever been picked on by a teacher? What did the rest of the class do?
-He picks on the student. I have been but we were just playing around, I don’t take it seriously. The rest of the class usually just laughs along.
9.Do you know anyone with any of Emile’s characteristics?
-yes, someone is always trying to act or do something to get them accepted, but it doesn’t really work out.
10.Why do they choose to pick on Brother Eugene?
-he is easier to pick on than anyone else.
11.Jerry feels like he can’t talk to his father. How could he remedy that situation? Do you ever feel that way? How could you remedy the situation?
-He should approach him and try, what’s the worst that could rally happen. If it doesn’t work out he can find someone else like a father to talk to. I have felt that way because my parents don’t drop subjects so I don’t like to bring anything up, it feels awkward sometimes.
12.What have you had to sell for school fundraisers? Have you felt any pressure to sell?
-I’ve sold things for jump rope for heart, magazines, and candles. I only felt pressured because I didn’t think I would sell enough in time.

The Chocolate War DQ’s Chapters 10-20

1. Were you aware of the fact that bullying can have a horrible affect on adults just as it doesn’t on kids?
-yes, because on person bullying follows you and affects other people
2. Should Jerry have said no to selling the chocolates?
-yes
3. How much school spirit should we have? Where should we draw the line?
-I think we should all have positive school spirit to represent how great your school really is. The students kind of make up the school and if you cheer it on it makes it all the better. We should draw the line if it gets to the point when you’re fighting with other schools about who is better and it becomes a problem with rivalry.
4. Should you make sacrifices for your school?
-I think so, if it’s for good.
5.Paul and “Tubs” have humiliating experiences selling chocolates. What have been your experiences with fundraisers?
-I felt embarrassed to approach people
6. What makes Brother Leon a bully?
-He chooses one person and picks on them in front of everyone.
7. Do you think the world is mad up of either victims or victimizers? Explain.
-most people are victims of something whether we choose to or not to be. But really both.
8. How does Brother Leon bribe David Caroni? Would someone be able to bribe you with a grade?
-He bribes him by basically saying he’ll better his grad. I would feel right about it, but I would consider it.
9. Why does Jerry refuse to sell the chocolates after the assignment is over?
-He's doesn't feel like selling them anymore.
10. Dos Jerry really have a choice whether or not he sells the chocolates?
-no
11. Jerry feels sick every morning because he has to face Leon. What physical symptoms of the stress of speaking up for yourself have you suffered?
-I get nervous and hate having to deal with the same thing over and over. But sometimes I don’t know what to say or how to confront someone.
12. Should the teachers do something about the Vigils? If they were in your school, would you want them to?
-yes, no one can really take that they are how they are and they are too controlling.
